Dr. Georgia Ede – 'Our Descent into Madness: Modern Diets and the Global Mental Health Crisis'

Dr. Georgia Ede received her B.A. in Biology from Carleton College in Minnesota, then spent seven years as a research assistant in the fields of biochemistry, wound healing, and diabetes before going on to earn an M.D. from the University of Vermont College Of Medicine.

Dr. Ede then completed her residency in general adult psychiatry at Harvard’s Cambridge Hospital in 2002 and was a staff psychopharmacologist at Harvard University Health Services from 2007 to 2013. In 2013 she left Harvard to become the psychiatrist for Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, where she provides nutrition consults as well as psychiatric services to Smith students.

Dr. Ede was the first and only psychiatrist at Harvard University Health Services to offer nutrition consultation as an alternative to medication management to students, faculty and staff. Her areas of expertise include ketogenic and pre-agricultural diets, food sensitivity syndromes, and college mental health. She explores food’s powerful effects on brain chemistry, hormonal balance and metabolism for Psychology Today and on her website www.DiagnosisDiet.com.

    Very interesting but I worry about doing this. Why?
    Cancer, by eating mostly meat or just meat you bump up IGF1/HGH (via diet) which has been linked to Cancer, angiogensesi, metasteses etc. Also linked to shortening life, look into mTOR pathway and Methionine and how they affect longevity.
    Valter Longo the Gerontologist has stated this, he genetically modified mice that had low levels of IGF1 and they lived much longer than mice who had normal levels, by ingesting only eat the gut then selects a type of bacteria that in linked with colon polyps and colon cancer.
    How many vegan, keto or carnivores became super centenarians? Very few if any. So these would be my primary concerns, Im not saying eat is not healthy.

    Baffling the majority rejects this knowledge and clings to carbohydrates and seed oils. I learned this from a few forward thinking professors in my pre med in the 90’s. But I always give up arguing with vegans who insist their canola oil based beyond burger is healthier than my grass fed beef steak.

    Thanks for sharing this! To add to this, vitamin B12 deficiency can cause depression. A person may be eating lots of foods with B12, but may not be absorbing the vitamin adequately. Reasons for malabsorption of B12 include: history of having part of the intestine removed, having Crohn’s disease and the resulting inflammation, taking acid suppressing medications, and having low stomach acid!

    I am not a vegetarian or vegan but my grandmother taught me to soak legumes and discard the soaking water and to cook them thoroughly to remove the antinutrients. My biology prof for a specialized plant-animal interaction course reiterated the same thing. This is important for people who cannot afford a lot of animal protein, for example many working class people in North America. Similarly, old fashioned long fermentation of grains and the use of sourdoughs as leavening before baking bread reduces plant antinutrient compounds.

    I love this but there is so much missing on topic of B12 deficiency which is an epidemic in the US and UK.

    The standard ranges has been lowered to a dangerously low level as the general public becomes more deficient and they call it normal. They let people get down to 160 now and call it normal while Japan and parts of Europe treat people for deficiency once they get to the 500-550 range.

    Testing is lacking in the US where they won’t even check active B12 and holotranscobalamin. Doctors also don’t understand that b12 supplements can interfere with blood work for up to 4 months as well. So vegans and vegetarians can get checked and thing they are fine for a while later on end up having seizures and permanent nerve and brain damage. They tell patients that enriched foods, multi vitamins, nutritional yeasts, and b complexes will test and prevent deficiency which is mostly not true. They also don’t know how to treat b12 deficiency as they don’t understand it can take 6 months to a year to recover from low b12 and rebuild liver stores. They don’t understand that blood work can look normal after one shot and it’s inaccurate results. They think that one or even a few B12 shots can treat a person and their liver stores will magically be restored which makes no sense. Don’t don’t understand that sometimes high b12 can mean low b12 and they don’t understand functional deficiencies either.

    There are so many meds that cause low b12, anesthesia and laughing gas deletes B12, vegan and vegetarian diet causes low b12, gut issues can cause low b12, low stomach acid can cause low b22, and some people just have absorption issues for no known reason. Many doctors forget that pernicious anemia is still a problem and most don’t realize that folic acid added to food and supplements can mask symptoms of b12 deficiency like anemia on blood work.

    Federal testing in the US revealed that over a 1/3 of adult Americans of all ages and with various diets tested near the danger zone for low B12 and this is with the standard range being far too low and not checking holotranscobalamin and active B12. So the deficiency rates are most likely much higher.

    There are some newer studies that show infants are being born with low B12, due to deficiency in mothers, and it’s suggested that babies be checked for deficiency but the US will not do it.

    There are so many problems around diagnosing and treating low B12. It’s madness and recently the US FDA lowered the dairy requirements for B12 despite all of this.

    It’s concerning because people ditching meat think they can get enough b12 from enriched foods as it is advertised this way but so little of it is even absorbed. It’s pretty scary.

    Low b12 can cause nerve damage, brain damage, GI symptoms, depression, anxiety, psychosis, insomnia, dementia, hallucinations, snd even death. There are well documented cases of people being misdiagnosed with MS when it was really B12.

    I would love to see Dr. Ede team up with the nurse and doctor from the book Could it Be B12?

    Completely opposite. I didn’t have good mental health until I went vegan (with vitamin D and B12 supplements).

    High cholesterol played hell with my mental health, thought process, math, you name it.

    If a carnivore diet works for others, excellent! For me, I am better than I have ever been, and I grew up eating garden grown vegetables, wild herbs, wild meat, worked hard, etc and my mental health was abysmal.

    Brilliant. Thank you. My Doctor put me on a similar diet to help lose weight and I feel great, numbers perfect and weight coming down. I think too with women is that they are very conscious of what other women are doing, and they will tend to follow the crowd for social acceptance. The rise of militant veganism is of real concern for the Australian farmers.

    This is irresponsible, recommending a diet for which you have absolutely no evidence! There are studies that prove the more plant based the diet , the lower the rate of dementia, depression and anxiety. Anything that helps the blood vessels, helps the brain. You look like you could benefit from a plant based diet yourself,

    Not to worry, the women who are choosing the vegan diet, 99% of them are unattractive and unlikely to find a partner before their fertility expires. These tend to be the shitty feminist types who are only vegan so they can pretend they are morally superior (as in, they have low social value and use veganism as a way of claiming they are better than the people who are more popular and attractive than they are).

    The other 1% are the real deal, and they are worth knowing (based on the ones I have met), but they are the silent minority when it comes to veganism.

    My daughter in law was vegan and had several pronlems with depression and bipolar issues.
    I finally talked her out of veganism into carnvore.
    All those issues disappeared overnight. The brain .reds proper nutrition. You cannot get ot from plants.
    Its impossible in my opinion and stupid to try.
